The places and the threats

For the purposes of this project, areas within nature reserves, national parks, state reserves and a few forest reserves (most have been brought under the Mining Act and so are potentially open to this use) are excluded although in some cases inappropriate management actions may be occurring or proposed even for these supposedly secure reserves.

The focus is therefore on areas lacking either maximum administrative protection or a formal, secure and appropriate management regime. Using such criteria some conservation tenures (eg. conservation area, regional reserve, nature recreation area) are nevertheless considered “threatened areas”, as are lands within state forest of course.

Threats to the various areas include any or all of the following: the direct or indirect effects of forestry, mineral exploration &/or mining, inappropriate recreational activities, etc., or maybe just a basic lack of secure and clear conservation management.

The values affected as a result include (but are not restricted to) biodiversity, geodiversity, aspects of cultural heritage, intrinsic values such as wilderness, natural landscapes, recreational values, water catchments, etc.
